The mission of Trailstompers.com is to enable everyone to explore and discover the spectacular trails in the San Francisco Bay Area by providing the best available online resource. We continue to expand and improve the information available on the website, and strive to ensure that the information is accurate and up-to-date. I moved to the spectacular San Francisco Bay Area in 2006 and started trail running in 2007. At that time I was new to trail running and not very familiar with the local trails. Through friends, running groups, and internet research I started making my own descriptions of each newly "discovered" route around the Bay Area. By 2009 I had assembled a treasure trove of information about the trails and wanted to share them with the world. Working together with local Bay Area trail running experts, we created the ultimate online guide to Bay Area trails.

As of 2014 we are adding downloadable GPX tracks of the Favorite Runs in each park, so now you can download the track to your favorite device or make your own map. 
  • For visualizing the GPX data on a map with trail names and topo lines, we prefer to use GPS Visualizer with the OpenCycleMap (OCM) or OpenStreetMap (OSM) layer.
  • If you don't have a handheld GPS or watch, you can turn your iPhone into a decent substitute.  We prefer the MotionX GPS app to view or record tracks.  Just upload the GPX track to your iPhone and then use the map to guide you along the route. This app also uses the OCM/OSM layers.
  • Finally, if you are looking for a web-based map that shows all of the cool trails in the Bay Area, check out OpenCycleMaps.  This is an open-source mapping project that has almost every trail in the Bay Area mapped and named!
